Celebrating Progress: Highlights from Our Friendsgiving/Holiday Meeting
At our recent Friendsgiving/Holiday Party, we discussed key updates on our legislative efforts, civics education, and upcoming events. Special guest speaker Jennifer Rubin, President, LWVNC outlined the challenges and victories in our advocacy work while encouraging attendance at the January Regional Meeting. We also reviewed progress on our website, membership platform, and fundraising efforts for International Women’s Day.

December 10, 2024 Friendsgiving/Holiday Party

Call to Order: Sue Engelhardt
Jennifer shared the path forward in this new era, including legislation updates. She said the League would continue to fight legislative battles and we would win some and lose some. She discussed the need for civics education based on the lack of knowledge about voting. She also talked about her background, growing up on a farm in Ohio and being in a political family. She encouraged attendance at the upcoming Regional meeting in January in Greenville.
President’s Report:
– LWVNENC Events/Outreach July 2024 – December 2024 shared with members, with a discussion of all the work that was done to educate voters, register voters and get the vote out.
– Board of Elections Observers Feedback from Sue, Gail Ward and Jan Lauten. All agreed important to be at the meetings to observe our election process.
– ChapterSpot, LWV’s new Membership Platform – Linda, Terra, Dusti, and Sue are attending training for the roll-out in January/February. Will make membership accounting much easier.
– Website Project – Signed a contract with Dusti Ward for 12 months at $100 per month to keep website updated. Thanks to Laura for finding Dusti and to the Board for the approval to spend the $1200.
– LWVNC Eastern Regional Meeting – January 11 in Greenville. We can have up to 10 members attend. Dorsey, Judy and Sue have signed up so far. Sue will reach out to others. Very worthwhile to attend, with LWVNC providing information plus listening to local league needs.
– International Women’s Day Wine Tasting Fund Raiser – Motion approved to make $200 deposit for the event this coming year, to be on March 11, 2025 (Laura motioned; Judy seconded).

Membership: Have 62 members; 50 principle and 12 additional.
Treasurer’s Report: Update provided by Terra – a healthy balance of $11,244.92.
Social Media Update – Laura continues to post on Instagram and FB.

NC POTATO FESTIVAL
LWVNENC had our first official booth at the NC Potato Festival this year! So many folks stopped by for our Civics 101 trivia wheel game that we almost ran out of prizes. We are also proud to report that some new voters got registered and we gained a couple of new members. Already looking forward to next year!

THIRD ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY WINE TASTING IS A SOLD-OUT SUCCESS!

Thanks to all who came out to support the League at this year’s International Women’s Day Wine Tasting at 2 Souls Wine Bar in Elizabeth City! A great time was had by all as we enjoyed sampling three different wines from women-owned or operated wineries and hearing a wonderful presentation by professor Sandra Krueger of College of the Albemarle. Be sure to join us next year!
LWVNENC Partners with Common Cause NC to #UniteNC
North Carolina is ready to vote! These informative sessions, one in Elizabeth City and one in Hertford, helped prepare voters in our community for changes in how we vote in the Tar Heel State.

National Voter Registration Day at the Pasquotank County Library

WE ARE ALL ABOUT VOTER REGISTRATION! On Voter Registration Day, we partnered up with the Pasquotank County Library to spread the word about voting. Hope you were able to come by! If you didn’t get to register, it’s not too late to register AND vote during Early Voting in Pasquotank County. Early Voting for the Municipal Election in Elizabeth City starts tomorrow, Thursday, September 21 at 8:00 AM at the Board of Elections on Parkview Drive.

The 2nd Annual International Women’s Day Wine Tasting at 2Souls Wine Bar in Elizabeth City was a sold-out event once again! Attendees sampled wines from women-owned and operated wineries while enjoying excellent company and an inspiring speech by Charlene Wade, president of WorkForce Resources, Inc.

Congratulations and a hearty thank you to Sue Englehardt, Judy Lampley, and Linda Kaul for representing the League of Women Voters of Northeastern North Carolina at the March 2022 LWV Council meeting. This amazing group brought home a second-place prize in the “We Did It” competition at Council for their presentation on some of the consequential women of history featured on our mural at the Museum of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City.
